Nature's Fury Strikes Pomas: Tornado Causes Widespread Damage

A rare and powerful tornado swept through the small village of Pomas in southern France, wreaking havoc and leaving 39 people injured, two of whom were severely hurt. The tornado, which struck the Aude department late Monday afternoon, was characterized by local officials as an event of extraordinary intensity, with Mayor Herve Gine likening the destruction to a war zone.
Witnesses captured the tornado's formation on social media as it tore through the village, uprooting trees, destroying homes, and damaging vital infrastructure. Gine noted that about 300 of Pomas’ 476 homes suffered significant damage, stating, "The nursery school is gone… we no longer have a school, we no longer have a town hall." He expressed relief that there were no fatalities, estimating that the situation could have been far worse.
Emergency responders worked tirelessly through the night, searching for any potential victims amidst the wreckage. With 7,250 households across the Languedoc-Roussillon region left without power, local authorities scrambled to provide temporary shelter for displaced residents. Some found refuge in a community hall, while others stayed with family and friends.
