Navigating Debt: Tips to Avoid the Financial Spiral

In the current economic climate, many individuals find themselves resorting to loans to cover everyday expenses. This pattern often leads to a dangerous cycle of debt, which typically begins not from extravagant spending, but rather from an income shortfall.
Benay Sagar, CEO of DebtBusters, emphasizes the importance of recognizing the warning signs: "If you ever find yourself borrowing to pay off previous debt, the first thing to do is to recognize the cycle and stop it immediately, if you can." This concern is reflected in a recent TransUnion Consumer Pulse Study, revealing that 39% of South Africans anticipate missing at least one payment, with inflation ranking among their top financial concerns.
Ayesha Hatea from TransUnion South Africa notes that while consumers are managing, their leeway is diminishing. Confidence in financial prospects has decreased, with only 66% of respondents feeling optimistic about their financial future, down from 71% last year.
Interestingly, younger consumers under 35 often utilize credit wisely, leveraging credit cards for cash flow management and rewards, and using personal loans for debt consolidation. However, financial experts warn that poor credit management can quickly lead to significant issues.
