Nepal Seeks Technical Aid Post-Disaster, Not Search and Rescue

Nepal’s Foreign Minister Shisir Khanal has outlined the nation’s immediate needs following the catastrophic floods that struck its Himalayan borders. The floods, unleashed by a glacier collapse on August 26, 2026, have resulted in nearly 600 fatalities and left over 2,000 people missing across Nepal and Tibet.

While acknowledging the immense devastation, Khanal emphasized that Nepal is capable of managing its own search and rescue operations. Instead, he highlighted the urgent requirement for specialized foreign assistance in areas lacking local expertise. These include rescuing individuals trapped in tunnels, restoring transport and communication links, and conducting DNA testing for identifying deceased victims.

Requests have already been made to neighboring countries India and China for the provision of bailey bridges to facilitate recovery efforts in regions where infrastructure has been severely compromised. Despite the enormity of the disaster, Khanal insists on the sufficiency of local rescue efforts, stating, “We think there is no need for repetition in this.”
