New Whale Museum Set to Open in Northern Norway by 2027

A groundbreaking new museum dedicated to whales is on track to launch in Andenes, Northern Norway, with its doors opening on June 4, 2027. Titled The Whale, this innovative knowledge center aims to merge science, art, storytelling, and sound to provide a unique exploration of these magnificent sea creatures.

The concept for The Whale originated in 2014 when a group of local whale enthusiasts and tourism advocates sought to create a new attraction. Following an international architectural competition in 2019, Danish firm Dorte Mandrup was chosen to design the museum. Construction is currently underway, managed by contractor HENT and supported by experiential designers Ralph Appelbaum Associates and Tamschick Media + Space.

Community engagement is a priority, with local residents invited to participate in workshops and discussions as the project progresses. Visitors can anticipate immersive experiences, including the Species Gallery showcasing whale evolution, a Soundscape featuring whale songs, and the Horizon Room offering a unique view of Earth's oceans. Ticket packages will be available starting in autumn 2026, including options that combine admission with hotel stays and whale-safari adventures.
