Australian tennis player Nick Kyrgios has been provisionally suspended after testing positive for cocaine during the Mallorca Open on June 22. The International Tennis Integrity Agency confirmed that Kyrgios's sample contained benzoylecgonine, a cocaine metabolite, prompting the suspension effective from August 4.
In a heartfelt Instagram post, the former world number 13 admitted to making a "huge mistake" and expressed regret for his actions, particularly towards his fans and family. He stated, "I take full responsibility for this situation and am sorry to the kids who follow me. I know the example this sets and I'm deeply disappointed in myself."
Kyrgios’s suspension bars him from participating in any tennis events, including Grand Slams, and he has not yet appealed the decision. The athlete has faced challenges in recent years due to injuries, managing only four singles matches this season, with his last appearance in the doubles at Wimbledon.
After a series of controversies, including previous fines for unsportsmanlike behavior and a past assault charge, Kyrgios has recently focused on his mental health, revealing struggles that led him to a psychiatric hospital in 2019. As part of his response to this latest incident, he will be stepping away from social media for 28 days to focus on his well-being.
