OpenAI Faces Executive Exodus Amid Restructuring and IPO Preparations

By Editor • August 26, 2026 • 2 min read

OpenAI, renowned for its cutting-edge models like GPT-5.6 and a growing user base of 15 million, is experiencing a significant shake-up as over a dozen executives depart the company. This exodus raises questions about the organization’s internal dynamics, especially as it gears up for a potential public offering.

Prominent figures among the departures include key executives such as the COO, chief revenue officer, and chief marketing officer, alongside numerous team leads. The recent exit of Chris Malone, who headed the data centers, is particularly notable. Malone joined OpenAI in March 2025 and left just last week, a move that follows a reorganization aimed at streamlining operations and reducing costs.

Health issues and a shift in company focus have been cited as reasons for some of these exits. CEO Sam Altman is concentrating on profitable ventures by sidestepping costly side projects, which may have contributed to Malone’s unexpected resignation. OpenAI confirmed that Malone’s role has been restructured under VP Sachin Katti, indicating a shift in the reporting hierarchy.

The leadership dynamics are also shifting, with co-founder Greg Brockman reasserting control over infrastructure and product teams. Historically, Brockman has played a pivotal role in the company’s development, though his management was minimized in 2019 when Altman took over as CEO. Following a brief hiatus in 2024, Brockman has returned to a more influential position, suggesting a strategic pivot as the company prepares for an IPO.

OpenAI is looking to tap into public markets, having filed for an IPO with the SEC in June, though it’s projected to go public by 2027. This timeline contrasts with rival Anthropic, which is reportedly making a profit and may beat OpenAI to the market. Altman’s reflections on a challenging year coupled with the internal reorganization signal a need for OpenAI to enhance revenue while trimming excess.
