Google's Gemini Struggles with Confusing Branding in AI Landscape

By Editor • August 26, 2026 • 2 min read

In a recent announcement, Google touted its Gemini Live voice features, promising a seamless user experience without the need to decipher various options like Spark, Daily Brief, or quick inbox searches. However, the reality is that Gemini's complex branding undermines this goal, leaving users overwhelmed by a cluttered interface.

The Gemini app allows users to toggle between distinct features, each represented by a separate icon, which complicates what should be a straightforward interaction. For instance, the Daily Brief feature offers personalized updates by pulling data from Google’s suite of applications. Yet, it often misses the mark by mixing urgent reminders with irrelevant follow-ups, leading to an experience that feels more intrusive than helpful.

In contrast, the Spark feature is a potentially powerful tool that acts on users' behalf, yet it is unnecessarily branded as a standalone entity. Users should not have to navigate through different modes to complete a task; an intuitive AI should simply respond to requests without the added complexity of branding.

This issue is not exclusive to Google. The AI industry as a whole presents its internal mechanisms directly to consumers, resulting in a disjointed experience. Users of competing platforms like Anthropic’s Claude or ChatGPT find themselves switching between different modes, which can feel unnatural and cumbersome.

Apple’s approach to AI with Siri could provide a solution, as it integrates smart features into existing applications without requiring users to learn new systems. This simplicity may resonate with users, contrasting sharply with the convoluted branding of many current AI offerings.

As highlighted by a16z investment partner Justine Moore, users prefer seamless interactions—like texting a friend—rather than navigating through multiple applications for assistance. The rise of text-based AI services that allow users to engage via simple chat interfaces suggests that ease of use is key in the evolving landscape of AI.
