Oura Under Fire: Lawsuit Claims Smart Ring Misleads Users on Sleep Tracking

By Editor • August 21, 2026 • 1 min read

A class action lawsuit has been filed against Oura, the maker of a popular smart ring, alleging that the company misled consumers about the accuracy of its sleep tracking capabilities. Filed on Thursday in San Francisco by Clarkson Law Firm, the lawsuit asserts that Oura rings fail to measure critical physiological signals necessary for evaluating sleep quality and instead rely on AI-generated estimates that are claimed to be highly inaccurate.

The complaint highlights a common frustration among users, who have reported discrepancies between their perceived sleep quality and what the Oura ring indicates. Many users have noted instances where they felt unrested yet were informed their sleep was optimal. The lawsuit suggests that Oura's marketing misrepresents the device's capabilities, promoting its rings as able to provide insights comparable to those of clinical sleep labs, despite the technical limitations of the wearable.

Oura is accused of advertising its products as “built for accuracy” and achieving “unparalleled accuracy,” with claims of 79% accuracy in sleep measurements and 95% sleep-staging accuracy compared to clinical standards. The lawsuit argues that true sleep assessment requires equipment not available in a consumer device and emphasizes the potential dangers of misleading health-related technology.

Ryan Clarkson, co-founder of the law firm, emphasized the importance of accurate health information, stating, “Misinformation cannot be tolerated.” The lawsuit seeks to hold Oura accountable for these claims and calls for corrective measures to prevent future misrepresentation of its products.
