The Israeli military has come under fire after confirming that soldiers marked Palestinian detainees with numbers on their foreheads during a recent operation in the town of Qabatiya, located south of Jenin in the occupied West Bank. This incident, which occurred on Monday, involved troops searching homes and arresting several young men, according to Palestinian news sources.
One detainee, Ahmad al-Hathnawi, who was marked with the number '44', described the experience as unprecedented, stating he had never before faced such treatment in his multiple previous detentions. He expressed that the markings seemed intended to intimidate both detainees and their families, signaling a message to local residents regarding the presence of Israeli settlers in the area.
Video footage of the operation highlighted the distressing practice, which had previously been reported in April when soldiers wrote numbers on Palestinian women’s hands. The Israeli army, commenting on the recent incident, acknowledged it as a lapse in judgment and assured that lessons had been learned from the event.
In response, Knesset member Ahmad Tibi condemned the act as “shocking and repulsive,” emphasizing the dehumanizing aspect of reducing individuals to mere numbers. Meanwhile, reports indicate an alarming rise in violence against Palestinians, with the Palestinian prime minister's office citing over 467 attacks in just one week, alongside the demolition of numerous homes.
The situation has escalated further as settlers have begun establishing new outposts on Palestinian land, raising fears among local leaders of a systematic effort to displace Palestinian communities.
