Outrage Erupts Over Death of White Helmet Rescuer in Syrian Police Custody

By Editor • August 17, 2026 • 1 min read

The death of Mohammed Gamira, a former member of the White Helmets, has ignited widespread protests in Syria, particularly in Latakia province, following allegations of torture during his police detention.

Gamira, a father of two, passed away in a hospital after being held for three days at the Haffeh police station due to a financial dispute. His family claims that he was subjected to severe physical abuse despite warnings about his chronic haemophilia, leading to catastrophic internal bleeding. Reports indicate he suffered a brain hemorrhage before his demise.

In response to the public outcry, Syria's Interior Ministry announced an investigation into the circumstances surrounding Gamira's detention, promising that any breaches of protocol by police personnel would be addressed decisively. Interior Minister Anas Khattab expressed condolences to Gamira's family and emphasized that those responsible would face appropriate consequences.

This incident has raised alarms among the Syrian populace, recalling the dark legacy of torture and deaths in custody under the regime of former President Bashar al-Assad, where over 200,000 people reportedly lost their lives in prisons.
