PIMS Transfers Serious Gynaecological Cases to Local Hospitals After Tragedy

In the wake of a tragic incident resulting in the deaths of 14 newborns, the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) has initiated a temporary referral system for serious gynaecological cases to surrounding hospitals, including the Holy Family Hospital (HFH) in Rawalpindi.

On Thursday, HFH accepted four female patients from PIMS, with its Medical Superintendent, Dr. Ijaz Butt, assuring that the hospital was well-prepared and had no overwhelming patient influx in its gynaecology and pediatrics wards. Special arrangements, including dedicated staff and a new ward, have been established to accommodate these patients.

Meanwhile, newly-appointed Secretary of Health, Mohammad Mehmood, emphasized the need for improved healthcare infrastructure and expressed his commitment to addressing existing challenges at PIMS. He plans to work closely with the hospital to identify and resolve problems while also exploring technological advancements in healthcare.

Dr. Ijaz Butt confirmed that HFH is equipped with updated facilities, having conducted a fire safety drill recently, and is ready to manage the transferred patients effectively. In contrast, the Benazir Bhutto Hospital (BBH) has not yet received any patients but has set up a special desk to facilitate future referrals.

Dr. Sharjeel Sheikh, the BBH Medical Superintendent, stated that they are prepared to handle emergency cases from PIMS should the need arise. Both hospitals are collaborating to ensure that patients receive the necessary care during this challenging time.
