Punk Pioneer David Fair of Half Japanese Passes Away at 74

David Fair, the co-founder of the influential punk band Half Japanese, has died at the age of 74 following a battle with cancer. His brother, Jad Fair, announced the news on Facebook, sharing a heartfelt photo of the duo together.

Half Japanese, which emerged in 1974, began as a project between the Fair brothers in either Michigan or Maryland, evolving from casual bedroom jams into a cult phenomenon. With their 1980 debut album, 1/2 Gentlemen/Not Beasts, they captured the chaotic essence of their music, which blended punk, noise, and avant-garde elements.

David Fair was also known for his groundbreaking work, How to Play Guitar, which challenged traditional guitar techniques and embodied the punk ethos of creativity without constraints. The duo's work influenced many, including Kurt Cobain, who brought them on tour.

While David stepped back from the band during the 1980s, Half Japanese continued to thrive, culminating in a reunion in 2012. They released the album Overjoyed in 2014 and continued to produce new music and archival collections. Travis McElroy, founder of Thick Syrup Records, praised David as a unique talent who believed in music free from constraints.
