In Myanmar's Sagaing region, reconstruction of war memorials dedicated to Japanese soldiers who perished during World War II is now underway, following significant damage from a 7.7 magnitude earthquake in March 2022.
On Saturday, a groundbreaking ceremony marked the start of the restoration, attended by officials from the Japanese Embassy and representatives from a local organization overseeing the project. The Buddhist pagoda, originally constructed in 1976, will be fully rebuilt due to extensive damage.
Repair efforts also include restoring stone monuments that have become unreadable, with the project expected to conclude by March 2027. The organization leading the work aims to bolster Japan-Myanmar relations through this initiative, which follows extensive surveys conducted earlier this year to assess the damage and verify the names of those honored.
