Rediscovering the Allure of National Parks

Once dismissive of national parks as too commercial, my perspective shifted dramatically during a spontaneous road trip through the majestic landscapes of the West. What began as an escape from a chaotic life transformed into a profound appreciation for the beauty and accessibility of these natural treasures.
In my early 20s, I was the epitome of a rugged outdoor enthusiast—climbing, skiing, and hiking in solitude with my large dogs. I considered national parks to be too developed and easy, lacking the raw adventure I craved. However, a life upheaval led me to a summer spent road-tripping with my husband and dog through the Canadian Rockies. Our journey brought us to several national parks, including Yellowstone and Glacier, opening my eyes to their unique allure.
What struck me most was the diversity of visitors enjoying the parks: families, tourists, and seasoned mountaineers alike. While I initially stayed close to the roads, watching Old Faithful erupt and traversing the iconic Going-to-the-Sun Road, I began to appreciate the convenience these parks offered. I could experience breathtaking views in flip-flops and jeans, all while being guided by friendly rangers.
This ease of access didn’t diminish my experience; instead, it ignited a deeper desire to explore. I found myself yearning for more intimate encounters with nature, like camping on Olympic’s beaches or hiking to Glacier’s icebergs. Two years later, I joined National Park Trips, where I immersed myself in the wonders of 25 national parks over the past decade.
Through my adventures, I witnessed firsthand the transformative power of national parks. From helping an elderly photographer navigate the night sky in Zion to guiding anxious hikers to serene alpine lakes, I learned that these parks draw people into nature, fostering a desire to protect it. A recent hike in Rocky Mountain National Park exemplified this, showcasing a diverse crowd of outdoor enthusiasts, all united by their love for the wilderness.
While I still cherish secluded hikes off the beaten path, I proudly identify as a national park enthusiast. This National Parks Week, I encourage everyone to celebrate and protect these vital spaces. Our national parks are not just gateways to nature but also the foundation of our outdoor heritage and the future of conservation.
