Reimagining Indie Film Distribution: A Touring Approach

By Editor • August 26, 2026 • 2 min read

Independent filmmakers often find themselves in a frustrating cycle: they pour their souls into creating a film, only to face an uphill battle in securing theatrical screenings. Daren Smith, an independent producer, sheds light on this pervasive issue, arguing that traditional distribution strategies are failing indie films. Instead, he proposes a groundbreaking touring model akin to that used by musical artists.

Many indie films struggle to gain traction in theaters, often relying on hope rather than strategy. Smith's experience with his film, "Faith of Angels," exemplifies this struggle. After securing a special screening in Sacramento, he faced the daunting task of selling out the event with just 48 hours' notice. This led him to rethink his approach for future projects.

Smith's next venture involved a concerted effort to pre-sell tickets, aiming for 1,000 in each city to create the kind of buzz that would entice theaters to offer showtimes weeks in advance. Drawing from his background as a live sound engineer who toured with bands, he envisioned a unique event format that combined film with live, in-person elements to engage audiences directly.

By November 2025, planning was underway for a 20-city tour. Smith's team, including cultural consultant Liliana Bolaños, worked to establish partnerships and venues across the country. As they wrapped production in May, a rough screener helped secure additional collaborators, further expanding their reach. Notably, an unexpected inquiry about a stop in Twin Falls, Idaho, turned into one of their highest RSVP counts.

The tour operates on a model that offers free general admission, focusing on generating proof of concept rather than immediate revenue. Smith explains that a packed house in Provo could serve as compelling evidence for distributors, enhancing their chances of securing better showtimes. The economics are carefully crafted, with 50 VIP tickets available at a flexible price point, generating funds solely for marketing.

Most venues are either donated or sponsored, minimizing costs. Smith and his team manage ticketing directly, avoiding extra fees typically associated with third-party platforms. With the entire tour budget hovering around $120,000, sponsors are expected to cover these expenses, allowing Smith to concentrate on the film's promotion.

As the tour progresses, conversations with theater circuits are already taking shape, aided by the tangible proof of audience interest. Smith emphasizes the strategy of narrowing their focus on cities where they have built an audience, understanding that sold-out screens are more valuable than larger but sparsely attended venues.

Each event concludes with an opportunity for attendees to purchase tickets for the film, leveraging the heightened interest generated throughout the evening. The combination of personal storytelling, live performances, and community engagement creates a compelling moment, maximizing ticket sales.

Smith acknowledges that this model may not suit every independent film, particularly those lacking community support. However, he emphasizes the importance of strategic planning and targeting family-friendly, values-based films that resonate with existing community groups. His experience illustrates that while the process requires time and foresight, success is attainable with the right approach.
