HANGHAR Redefines Domestic Architecture with Innovative Designs

In a bold challenge to conventional architectural norms, HANGHAR, the Madrid-based studio founded by Eduardo Mediero, is transforming the concept of home. Rather than adhering to traditional labels like ‘living room’ or ‘kitchen,’ HANGHAR prioritizes the emotional and spatial experience of living, questioning how these spaces should truly function.

One of their groundbreaking projects, Ronda House, revitalizes an 85-square-meter apartment in Murcia by removing the rigid hierarchies of rooms. Instead, it features a sequence of interconnected spaces that allow for a more fluid lifestyle. Mediero emphasizes that the goal isn't just to remove walls, but to create a backdrop for life, reducing the architectural decisions that dictate how inhabitants should behave.

Continuing this exploration, the studio's Lara House in Madrid showcases four visually connected rooms defined by large openings, fostering a sense of continuity. By minimizing fixed functions, HANGHAR allows the space’s atmosphere to dictate its use, enabling residents to define their own living experience.

In Casa Gracia, a 130-square-meter renovation, HANGHAR plays with the concept of corridors, transforming them from mere passageways into multifunctional areas that can serve various purposes, such as storage or even leisure. Mediero argues that the issue lies not in the corridor itself but in its limited perception.

On a contrasting note, the Studiolo project, completed in 2024, introduces a compact, deep-green cabinet that serves as a central retreat in an otherwise open-plan space. This design blurs the lines between furniture and architecture, offering a unique approach to privacy—one that embraces gradients rather than binaries.

HANGHAR’s latest venture, Casa Guadalupe, completed in 2025, explores how off-site fabrication can influence architectural design. This 120-square-meter home, constructed in just 48 hours, reflects local building traditions while utilizing modern materials, showcasing a commitment to site-specific design.

With a self-imposed deadline set for December 31, 2030, HANGHAR is racing against time to challenge and redefine the essential elements of domestic architecture, asking the pivotal question: which features are necessary, and which have simply become accepted norms?
