Reviving the Bruin Theatre: New Team Aims for October Reopening

A new wave of enthusiasm surrounds the revival of historic movie theaters in Los Angeles, with the Bruin Theatre in Westwood poised for an ambitious reopening this October. The theater, which shuttered in late July 2024 when Regency Theatres exited, is now under the stewardship of a fresh independent team led by Toronto exhibitor Rui Pereira.

Edwin Gomez, a former employee of the Vista Theatre and a passionate projectionist, is among the volunteers supporting this effort. "I got involved out of pure coincidence," Gomez shared, embodying the community spirit that characterizes this revival.

The Bruin Theatre stands as a testament to cinematic history, currently in relatively good physical condition, according to activist Ben Steinberg, who is part of the team spearheading the reopening. A recent inspection revealed that while much of the theater is intact, it nonetheless requires significant maintenance and updates. "The seats are in really good condition. We’re pretty optimistic," Steinberg remarked during a tour with theater historian Bill Counter, who noted that some of the theatre's mechanical systems date back to 1937.

While the Bruin's new operators aim for a fall reopening, the challenges of restoring an aging theater are substantial. Counter pointed out that the cost of restoration can vary dramatically based on what the operators are willing to invest. "You could come in and say, ‘OK, we’re going to spend five million and do a major renovation,’ or you could take a more hands-on approach like Rui's team and fix things as you go," he explained.

This approach marks a stark contrast to the previous attempt to reopen the Bruin, which was associated with filmmaker Jason Reitman. His team sought to acquire the theater as part of a broader initiative to revitalize the Westwood area, including a $25 million renovation of the Village Theatre. However, that effort fell apart amid disputes over the building's condition and escalating repair costs.

Reitman’s group had proposed various leasing options to the Bruin's owners, but ultimately faced complications that led them to file for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in June 2025. The legal tussle highlighted the difficulties inherent in restoring older venues, particularly when significant structural issues arise unexpectedly.

Despite the setbacks faced by Reitman’s initiative, the new team remains hopeful. Pereira’s strategy involves a more pragmatic approach to the restoration, focusing on essential repairs and reviving existing equipment. Whether or not they can meet the ambitious October deadline remains uncertain, but the community's excitement is palpable. The Bruin Theatre has the potential to join the ranks of other successfully revived venues like the Vista Theatre, the Egyptian, and the Cinerama Dome, all of which have seen a resurgence thanks to dedicated efforts from passionate individuals and organizations.
