Apollo Atomics Aims to Revolutionize Nuclear Power with Innovative Steam Generator Design

The nuclear energy sector is experiencing a resurgence, with new startups emerging to tackle the challenges of cost efficiency. Apollo Atomics, co-founded by Assil Halimi and Drew Walker, believes the key to affordable nuclear power lies not in developing new reactors, but in optimizing existing technology.
Halimi, the CEO of Apollo, highlights the steam generator as a critical component often overlooked in nuclear design. "We focus on the largest component, the steam generator," he stated. By significantly reducing its size, Apollo is able to create a more compact and efficient system compared to traditional reactors.
Current steam generators, essential for converting thermal energy into electricity, are typically large and handcrafted, making them costly and cumbersome. In contrast, Apollo's steam generator is designed to be mass-produced and is roughly the size of a person. This innovative approach allows Apollo to develop reactors that are 40 times smaller than those using conventional steam generation methods.
Recently, the startup secured a $26 million seed funding round to support the construction of a demonstration reactor, aiming for commercial deployment by 2028. Halimi forecasts that Apollo's power plants could produce electricity at a competitive rate of 3 cents per kilowatt hour, targeting costs that undercut even natural gas.
Apollo's design, rooted in MIT research, challenges existing steam generator technology that has remained static, primarily borrowing from coal and natural gas systems. Halimi points out that current designs do not fully utilize the high energy density of nuclear fuel sources like uranium.
To enhance efficiency, Apollo's steam generator will incorporate a compact metal block with fine channels allowing for improved heat transfer. This design enables factory assembly of both the reactor and generator, unlike traditional site-based construction, potentially reducing the time to build a 300-megawatt plant to under two years and lowering production costs significantly.
With a prototype already developed at MIT, Apollo plans to offer reactors in various sizes, from 10 to 300 megawatts, marking a significant step towards reshaping the nuclear power landscape.
