Revolutionizing Adhesives: A Biodegradable Solution

Petroleum-based adhesives are ubiquitous, but they hinder recycling efforts. Patty Ferreira, CEO and cofounder of Silvis Materials, emphasizes the issue, stating that labels made with such glues prevent containers from being recycled.

Since 2014, Ferreira has been developing fully biodegradable cellulose adhesives. Her innovative formula utilizes various plant cellulosic materials, aiming to reduce production emissions by 80% while consuming half the energy of conventional adhesives. Now, with the MIT Startup Exchange's support, Silvis is collaborating with industry partners to refine their product.
