Ricky Schroder, known for his role as Dolly Parton's father in two NBC biopics, is under fire for a tribute that many have deemed disrespectful following Parton’s passing. The country music legend died recently at the age of 80 after a short battle with cancer.
Schroder expressed mixed feelings on social media, stating, “I didn’t agree with her advocating for Transgender & Covid Vaccine support … but Loved her anyway.” This comment sparked outrage, with critics labeling his tribute as foul and self-centered.
In response to the backlash, he doubled down, sharing a video on Instagram where he criticized Parton's support for the COVID-19 vaccine, claiming he had warned her against it. The backlash intensified, with notable figures like Katie Couric and the band Garbage criticizing his remarks. Couric simply commented, “Ick,” while Garbage urged him to “F— off.”
Despite the negative reactions, some of Schroder’s supporters defended him, suggesting that differing opinions can coexist with love for one another. Known for his right-wing views, Schroder has previously made headlines for confrontational behavior regarding mask mandates during the pandemic.
