Romania Intercepts Explosive Drone Near Gas Project, Points Finger at Russia

By Editor • August 20, 2026 • 1 min read

In a significant security incident, Romanian F-16 fighter jets destroyed a marine drone on August 20, 2026, as it approached the Neptun Deep offshore gas project in the Black Sea. Romanian Defence Minister Radu Miruta confirmed that the drone was loaded with explosives and asserted it did not originate from Ukraine.

Romania's President, Nicusor Dan, condemned the drone’s presence, directly attributing the escalation to actions by the Russian Federation. This incident adds to a series of unauthorized drone activities in Eastern Europe, particularly as the region remains on high alert due to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.

The drone was first detected by a commercial vessel at approximately 6:28 a.m. local time, situated hundreds of meters from the gas project and about 80 nautical miles from Constanta. In response, two Romanian F-16s were deployed, resulting in the drone's destruction.

The Neptun Deep project is set to commence production in 2027 and currently employs hundreds of workers. This incident follows a trend of heightened tensions, including previous drone-related incidents in Romania, suggesting a precarious security environment in the region.
