Root Calls for Venue Choice Amid England's Ashes Absence at Headingley

By Editor • August 21, 2026 • 2 min read

Joe Root has expressed a desire for more choice regarding Ashes venues, following England's recent triumph over Pakistan at Headingley, where they secured their seventh consecutive win. However, the Yorkshire ground will not host an Ashes Test until 2031, which means England will miss out on playing at one of their most successful venues during next summer's home series.

Root acknowledged the disparity in venue advantages, noting that Australia has historically dominated certain grounds, including the Gabba in Brisbane and Perth. He emphasized the importance of playing at venues where the team has experienced success, saying, "As a player, you want to play at the grounds you have most success at as a team."

Reflecting on the recent victory, which marked a strong start to his second term as captain, Root highlighted Headingley’s conducive conditions for Test cricket. He lamented the ground's omission from the 2027 Ashes roster, despite its history of memorable matches, including the legendary 2019 contest against Australia, which is often compared to Ian Botham’s iconic performance in 1981.

The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) announced the allocation of venues for the next Ashes series, with Headingley set to host a women’s Ashes Test instead. Trent Bridge will serve as the northernmost venue for men’s Ashes matches, and Southampton will host an England-Australia Test for the first time.

Looking ahead, Root is poised to lead the team into next year’s Ashes, having resumed the captaincy after a hiatus since 2019. He is set to collaborate with new Test coach Stephen Fleming, who will take over from Brendon McCullum, currently under interim coach Marcus Trescothick for the ongoing Pakistan series.

Trescothick shared his enthusiasm for continuing with the Test squad, expressing admiration for Fleming’s past achievements in cricket. The dynamic between Root, Trescothick, and Fleming appears promising, with Root indicating ongoing communication between them, even during the series against Pakistan.

As England prepares for future challenges, they will undoubtedly look to build on their impressive record at Headingley, hoping for opportunities to showcase their talents at this iconic venue in the years to come.
