Round Hill, an independent music publisher, has initiated a lawsuit against AI companies Suno and Anthropic, claiming they unlawfully used hundreds of its songs to train their AI models. This legal action underscores a growing trend of copyright disputes in the music industry as it adapts to technological advancements.
The lawsuit follows similar actions against both companies, with Suno facing additional suits from major labels like Universal Music Group and Sony Music Group. Anthropic, on the other hand, is contending with accusations from Universal Music Publishing and others regarding the unauthorized use of song lyrics.
Round Hill, which manages iconic tracks such as the Goo Goo Dolls' “Iris,” is poised to expand its claims to potentially include over 10,000 songs, with damages estimated to exceed $1 billion. Music attorney Richard Busch, representing Round Hill, criticized the defendants for profiting while neglecting the rights of copyright holders.
