A recent drone strike in Zaporizhzhia has raised alarms over the use of fully autonomous drones by Russian forces, as a report by The New York Times reveals that an AI-driven drone killed three civilians at a gas station on July 6, 2026.
The victims included a 19-year-old university student and two men aged 41 and 48. Ukrainian drone experts and military officials examined the remains of the Molniya-2 drone involved in the attack, concluding it operated without any direct operator communication, which is characteristic of fully autonomous systems.
Evidence pointed to the absence of antennas on the drones, indicating they did not receive instructions during their flight. Instead, they were equipped with Nvidia Jetson Orin minicomputers, which are believed to have made targeting decisions based on pre-loaded terrain images. Investigators noted that these components were not encrypted, allowing them to analyze the drone’s programming and target recognition capabilities.
Ukrainian officials reported that some drones failed to detonate while others successfully exploded, with remnants of the devices confirming the advanced technology used. Both Russia and Ukraine are actively developing AI capabilities for drones, with Ukraine's former Defense Minister noting that autonomous target selection is part of their tactical evolution.
This incident highlights a worrying trend in modern warfare, as autonomous drones begin to remove human oversight from critical targeting decisions, raising ethical and safety concerns in conflict zones.
