Russian Security Forces Crack Down on Punk Festival, Detaining Nearly 100 Attendees

A recent punk festival in Russia's Leningrad region turned chaotic as security forces raided the event, leading to the detention of approximately 100 individuals. The Day x Night festival, held near Vyborg, was targeted by authorities on August 22 due to allegations of pro-Ukraine performances and drug use.

According to reports from 78.ru and RIA Novosti, security personnel described the festivalgoers as "left-wing radicals". They claimed to have discovered posters featuring Ukrainian symbols and various drugs during the operation, which involved securing the area, searching tents, and confiscating drones.

Footage from the raid depicted attendees lying face down on the ground while officers ordered them to comply. One detainee was seen by a table displaying items he claimed were drugs, although the nature of these substances has not been officially verified. A source noted that drones were being used by festival participants to film in a region close to the Finnish border.

The St. Petersburg police have yet to release an official statement on the incident, but authorities are reportedly considering whether to pursue criminal charges. An anonymous musician who played at the festival recounted the aggressive tactics used by the officers, which included physical intimidation and homophobic remarks. He emphasized that the festival atmosphere was generally friendly, and he observed no significant drug use or political displays.

Launched in 2023, the Day x Night festival had featured punk bands from St. Petersburg and Karelia and was scheduled for August 20-23. The exact location was typically disclosed to attendees only shortly before the event to maintain a level of privacy.
