Smiling Friends Creators Reflect on Emmy Nomination and Future Possibilities

The animated series 'Smiling Friends' has left a significant mark on its Gen Z audience since its debut in 2022, capturing attention with its quirky narratives centered around characters Pim and Charlie. Despite its recent Emmy nomination for Best Animated Series, creators Michael Cusack and Zach Hadel have decided to conclude the show after its third season, citing burnout as a primary reason.
Hadel, who voices Charlie, expressed his astonishment upon receiving the nomination. "I woke up to about a million text messages and missed phone calls. It’s surreal to see our tiny, 10-minute Adult Swim show next to giants like South Park or The Simpsons," he shared. Cusack echoed this sentiment, feeling honored yet surprised by the recognition. Both creators admit that while they don't expect to win, the nomination feels like a gratifying acknowledgment of their hard work.
This season was particularly noteworthy for its technical advancements, as Cusack explained, "The cinematography of the live-action stuff was a bit more elevated than what we would have done in season one." Hadel agreed, pointing out that they felt more confident in their character development and storytelling, allowing for bolder narratives.
One memorable aspect of the season was the introduction of Creed Bratton, known for his role in 'The Office', as Mr. Frog's live-action father. Hadel admitted that neither he nor Cusack had watched 'The Office', which he humorously acknowledged as a "death-penalty offense in America, especially in comedy." However, after reviewing clips of Bratton's performances, they were impressed and decided to cast him.
Despite being renewed for two additional seasons before calling it quits, the creators felt they needed to step back. "Every season's been hard to make," Cusack revealed, emphasizing that both he and Hadel recognized their creative energy had been depleted. "We can’t go into it when we’re feeling like this, so let’s just end it," he added.
Contrary to public perception, Hadel clarified that they were not lacking ideas but rather faced the reality of a demanding production process with a small crew and budget. "We still have a Google doc full of a bunch of ideas, but we wouldn’t have been happy doing it. It would have lost the spark," he explained.
Looking ahead, both creators have been busy with separate projects. Cusack co-created a show titled 'Dad’s House', set to debut on Netflix soon, while Hadel hinted at a new venture that might polarize audiences. Regarding the potential for more 'Smiling Friends' episodes, Hadel noted the likelihood fluctuates from day to day but confirmed that the chances are "not zero," suggesting a range of 20 to 80 percent possibility depending on their mood.
