Snowy Mountains Man Sentenced for Family Sexual Abuse

A man from the Snowy Mountains has received a 22-year prison sentence after pleading guilty to multiple charges of sexual abuse against his daughter and granddaughter. The sentencing took place on Friday at the Queanbeyan District Court.
Judge Thomas Jones described the abuse as a "pernicious abuse of trust," highlighting the vulnerability of the victims, who were left defenseless in a familial setting. The man, in his 70s and unable to be named for legal reasons, was found guilty of 10 child abuse charges, including four counts of sexual intercourse with a child.
The abuse came to light when the man's wife discovered him molesting his five-year-old granddaughter in late 2024. Following this revelation, he disclosed further instances of his misconduct to authorities. During the investigation, the man's daughter revealed that she had been abused from ages six to twelve between 2004 and 2009.
Judge Jones noted the man’s previous history of sexual offenses and his admission of having been a victim of abuse himself, along with a diagnosis of a pedophilic disorder. He will be eligible for parole in 2039, after serving a minimum of 15 years.
