Soaring Fuel Prices Drive Electric Motorcycle Adoption in Nigeria

Gombe, Nigeria – The streets of Pantami District in Gombe are witnessing a gradual but noticeable transformation in the world of transportation. Amid rising petrol prices, an increasing number of riders are opting for electric motorcycles, a shift that is less about environmentalism and more about economic necessity.

Since President Bola Tinubu abolished Nigeria’s longstanding fuel subsidy on May 29, 2023, fuel prices have skyrocketed, pushing petrol to approximately 1,365 naira (about $1) per litre, a sharp rise from around 200 naira (15 cents). This has forced many commuters and businesses to reconsider their transportation methods. While electric bikes, priced around 1 million naira ($735), are still beyond the reach of many, those who have transitioned report significant savings in fuel and maintenance costs.

Ayuba Abubakar, a farmer from Gombe, shared his experience of switching to an electric motorcycle. After just three months of use, he has avoided common mechanical issues associated with petrol bikes and estimates he saves about 5,000 naira ($3.7) weekly on fuel. "I usually spend the day moving around Gombe without charging," he noted, highlighting the efficiency of his new ride.

Despite the enthusiasm from early adopters, the widespread adoption of electric motorcycles faces significant hurdles, primarily the unreliable electricity supply in Nigeria. Many households receive minimal power daily, limiting the feasibility of recharging at home. Muhammad Abubakar, CEO of Sustenaa, stresses the need for sustainable solutions like solar-powered battery-swap stations, warning that relying on generators would merely shift emissions rather than eliminate them.

While electric motorcycles currently represent a niche market in Gombe, the combination of high fuel costs and the potential for improved air quality might catalyze a broader shift in Nigeria's transport landscape. As the country grapples with environmental concerns from its aging petrol-powered fleet, the emergence of electric vehicles could serve as a promising alternative.
