South Australia Faces August Flooding as Rainfall Records Shattered

South Australia is grappling with unprecedented rainfall this August, leading to record-breaking totals in several regions and prompting disruptions to Telstra services across the lower Yorke Peninsula.
Heavy downpours have caused minor flooding, particularly affecting areas like Yorketown, Coobowie, and Edithburgh. Telstra reported damage at its Yorketown exchange due to water ingress, impacting critical transmission equipment. The company is currently working to restore services for affected customers.
The State Emergency Service (SES) has been inundated with calls, responding to nearly 90 incidents on Monday alone. SES state duty officer Brad Flew noted scattered flooding around the Adelaide Hills and Mount Lofty Ranges, with water covering roads in areas such as Sellicks Beach and Aldinga.
The Bureau of Meteorology issued a minor flood warning for the Onkaparinga River, predicting rises below flood levels at Clarendon Weir and Old Noarlunga. Forecaster Michael Conway highlighted significant rainfall, reporting 65mm at Lenswood and noting that Adelaide itself saw 29mm, pushing the month’s total to 97mm.
With more rain forecasted, the SES expects to remain busy as conditions develop, particularly with the risk of fallen trees and additional flooding.
