Stefhany Lozano, a Colombian artist now based in Germany, has carved a unique niche in the art world, where hands take center stage in her expressive paintings. With a background steeped in art and creativity, Lozano's journey to becoming a full-time artist was anything but conventional.
Born in Bogotá, her artistic inclinations were nurtured in a family that celebrated art, yet she initially pursued a degree in Product Design. After moving to Germany in 2010 on a scholarship, she shifted her focus to arts and illustration, eventually earning an MA that set her on the path to painting. "I was afraid to be an artist because I was not sure I had the talent and could make a living out of it," she reflects, acknowledging her unconventional career trajectory.
Lozano now works as a freelance illustrator, contributing to various publications and festivals while also illustrating books that have gained recognition in the best-book-design lists. Her artwork has been showcased in prestigious galleries, including the Saatchi Gallery in London and venues across multiple countries.
A notable aspect of her work is the recurring motif of hands, which she uses as a powerful form of communication. In her paintings, hands convey emotions and narratives—whether a woman taking a selfie or another draped in contemplation before a mirror. Her series, Intimidad Pública, delves into the complexities of intimacy in public spaces, reflecting her personal experiences and feelings of vulnerability.
Lozano's project titled Rock, Paper, Scissors features 26 paintings focused solely on hands, emphasizing their expressive potential. "Hands have become one of my favorite expressive elements," she states, highlighting how even the slightest movement can alter the emotional impact of her work.
Her creative process begins with lists rather than sketches, allowing her to explore various scenes and ideas freely. Recently, she has introduced oil paints to add texture to her work and is experimenting with fabric to create soft sculptures inspired by her paintings. For Lozano, the thrill lies in maintaining creative freedom while building a body of work that resonates with viewers, and she looks forward to expanding her series in the coming year.
