'After ‘Tiger King’ came out, people just didn’t want to be portrayed as some crazy toothless hillbilly in Oklahoma,' he explained. This perception made it difficult for him to connect with potential interviewees, despite his extensive knowledge of reptiles and the exotic pet industry.

Reflecting on the series, Goode emphasized that 'Monsters of God' diverges from the sensationalism of 'Tiger King.' While he could have focused on the more outrageous personalities within the reptile community, he chose instead to explore the historical context and deeper narratives behind the reptile trade. This approach culminated in a finale that revealed the complexities of the characters involved, particularly Ken McLeod, a former US Fish and Wildlife Service officer.

Goode characterized McLeod's story as a cautionary tale, illustrating the unintended consequences of laws intended to protect endangered species. 'He was like an alcoholic running a liquor store,' Goode remarked, critiquing McLeod's decision to keep a critically endangered tortoise in his home for two decades.
