Sue Gray Describes Tenure with Keir Starmer as 'Unbearable'

Baroness Sue Gray has opened up about her challenging time as Chief of Staff to Sir Keir Starmer, labeling her experience as 'unbearable'. In a recent interview, Gray revealed her anxieties over internal disputes and fears of being secretly recorded in discussions within No 10.

After resigning from her role in 2024, Gray criticized Starmer for not addressing the negative leaks that plagued the Labour administration. 'It was definitely unbearable, particularly for me,' she asserted, mentioning the toll it took on her personal life and work routine as she attempted to avoid potential conflict.

She also expressed concerns about Starmer's leadership style, stating that he lacked a clear vision when he assumed office. In contrast, she praised Andy Burnham, Starmer’s successor, for his strong leadership and clarity about his agenda. 'He’s got huge experience,' Gray said, underscoring the differences between the two leaders.

Gray recounted a culture of anxiety within the office, where she felt the pressure of being monitored. 'Everything you say, you feel is somebody is recording it,' she remarked. Despite her attempts to raise these concerns with Starmer, she was disappointed by the lack of action taken to address the situation.

Her tenure became even more controversial following her high-profile investigation into Covid rule-breaking under Boris Johnson, which propelled her into the public eye. However, after facing a barrage of negative briefings, she stepped down, citing that she had become a distraction to the government’s work.
