Support for Trump Fractures Amid Wife's ICE Detention

Brent Jindra’s unwavering support for Donald Trump, which included voting for him three times, took a dramatic turn when his Russian wife, Galina Bobreneva, was detained by ICE in mid-July. Bobreneva, who legally entered the U.S. on a tourist visa in late 2021, was awaiting her green card after marrying Jindra in December 2025.
On July 29, the couple traveled from San Francisco to Burbank, intending to celebrate Bobreneva’s 40th birthday at Sonoma County vineyards. However, their plans were abruptly interrupted when plainclothes ICE agents approached them at the airport. Despite Bobreneva's insistence that she was in the midst of the green-card process and had all necessary paperwork, she was cuffed and taken away by the agents.
The Department of Homeland Security later claimed Bobreneva had violated the law. Although federal regulations allow for the detention of individuals applying for a green card with expired visas, past administrations had generally treated such cases differently.
Bobreneva spent over two weeks at an ICE detention center, where she described the conditions as inhumane. Sharing a cold room with other detainees, she reported a lack of medical care for those in need and inadequate facilities, with only four of seven shower stalls operational for 120 women. She recalled feeling dehumanized during her transport to the facility, stating, "I felt like a piece of meat, not like a human."
After multiple visits from Jindra, who pushed for her release, Bobreneva was finally freed on July 29 after posting a $35,000 bond. She is now fitted with an electronic monitor and is scheduled to report to ICE on August 5, with her first court hearing set for October 22.
Jindra's perspective on Trump's immigration policies changed dramatically following his wife's ordeal. Once a staunch MAGA supporter, he expressed disillusionment, stating, “There was never a mandate for this president to turn the barrel of the gun and start going after people who legally entered.”
