Syria and Libya Reestablish Diplomatic Ties with Embassy Reopening

By Editor • August 30, 2026 • 1 min read

After a hiatus of 14 years, Syria's embassy in Tripoli is set to reopen, a decision reached during talks between Libyan Prime Minister Abdul Hamid Dbeibah and Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad Hassan al-Shaibani.

The discussions, which took place on Sunday, also led to the reactivation of the Libyan-Syrian Joint Higher Committee, aiming to enhance political, economic, and social relations. Additionally, a Syrian consulate will be established in Benghazi.

The meeting focused on various topics including security collaboration, counterterrorism, and the status of detainees and refugees. Economic issues, particularly unresolved financial obligations between the two nations, were also addressed. Dbeibah referred to this agreement as the beginning of “a new chapter” in their diplomatic relationship.
