The Baby Grand Hotel: A Lavish Escape in San Diego

In the heart of San Diego, the newly unveiled Baby Grand hotel offers an extravagant experience reminiscent of a bygone era. Owner Arsalun Tafazoli envisioned a space that evokes the mystique of forgotten places, and with its striking features—20-foot waterfalls, a hidden lagoon, and elaborate rock formations—the hotel does just that.
Located near Coronado Island, the Baby Grand stands on the site of a once mundane midcentury motel, now transformed after a $17 million renovation. Tafazoli's hospitality company, CH Projects, collaborated with Brooklyn's Post Company to reimagine the property into a lavish, nature-infused escape, with creeping vines and ornate statues enhancing its charm.
Rejecting the minimalist trends of recent years, Tafazoli embraces a maximalist approach, declaring, "more is more." The hotel dazzles with its opulent decor: from solid marble and tiled mosaics to jewel tones and vintage art. Tafazoli cites influences from various cultural references, promising that every detail has a story.
A standout feature is the reservation-only oyster and champagne speakeasy, Fallen Empire, exuding a glamorous vibe with red mohair banquettes and mirrored walls. The courtyard is a vibrant tapestry of patterns and colors, with dining chairs designed to resemble seashells and tentacles, inviting guests to revel in its whimsical atmosphere.
Guest rooms boast luxurious amenities, including high-gloss parquet floors and giant clamshell headboards, with bathrooms featuring clawfoot tubs and mosaic tiles. Tafazoli acknowledges the lavish investment, admitting he may have "overinvested" in creating an immersive environment that transports guests away from the outside world.
Since its opening in May, the Baby Grand has become a bustling hub, attracting visitors eager to enjoy its Mediterranean-inspired dining at the Night Hawk restaurant, which fills the courtyard with laughter and music. Although the hotel aims to create a haven of tranquility, the lively atmosphere often immerses guests in a vibrant social experience.
For those seeking a peaceful retreat, the Baby Grand may not fit the bill. Instead, it offers an exhilarating journey into Tafazoli's imaginative world, where lavish decor and lively ambiance combine to create an unforgettable stay.
