The Pull-Up Challenge: Why Women Struggle More

By Editor • August 17, 2026 • 1 min read

Pull-ups are often viewed as a daunting bodyweight exercise, particularly for women. According to Prof. Leigh Breen from the University of Leicester, while they are beneficial for upper-body strength, they can be more difficult for women on average.

This difficulty stems from several factors. Women typically have a lower upper-body muscle mass compared to men and a higher body fat percentage. As pull-ups require lifting one’s full body weight, these physical differences can impact the strength-to-weight ratio, making the exercise more challenging.
