The Rise of the 'Jailscraper': Manhattan's Towering Detention Facility

The Manhattan Detention Facility, an ambitious structure soaring 335 feet at 125 White Street in Chinatown, is set to become the tallest jail in the world, earning it the moniker 'jailscraper.'

Designed by HOK, this 1,053,671-square-foot facility is part of a broader initiative to replace the infamous Rikers Island complex with four borough-based jails. The previous structure, known as The Tombs, was demolished in 2024.

The innovative design separates the building into two distinct volumes, connected by a pedestrian walkway, allowing Chinatown’s community to move freely through the area. Ground-level spaces will include a public lobby, community areas, and retail space, while parking for staff is discreetly situated underground.

HOK’s facade features a reddish mesh screen that provides both aesthetic appeal and functional privacy for inmates. Inside, the design prioritizes comfort, with non-institutional materials and spaces that promote agency and access to nature. Artwork salvaged from The Tombs will be integrated into the new facility.

Despite the forward-thinking design, local leaders have expressed concerns over the facility's structural integrity, prompting calls for a reassessment from Mayor Zohran Mamdani. The project is currently under construction, with completion anticipated by 2032.
