Hye the Store: A Tranquil Retreat for Korean Craft in Copenhagen

Nestled in the vibrant Nordhavn district of Copenhagen, Hye the Store has emerged as a unique boutique dedicated to the exquisite craftsmanship of South Korean and Asian artisans. Opened in June, this serene shop is housed in a red-brick warehouse amidst a dynamic design landscape that includes the likes of The Audo hotel and showrooms for Gubi and Kvadrat.

Founded by Hyeyoung Hwang, a former editor from Seoul with a passion for Asian crafts, Hye the Store showcases a thoughtful selection of functional yet beautifully designed objects. The minimalist aesthetic is meant to reflect the quiet beauty found in everyday items, drawing on the craftsmanship of independent makers and small brands. Hwang notes, “Living with Korean and Japanese objects has brought many small moments of pleasure to my own daily life, and I wanted to share that experience with others.”

The boutique’s inaugural collection features works from 15 South Korean artists, highlighting pieces like Taesoo Kim’s traditional sabal bowls and Studio EAEA’s cherry wood cutting boards. A standout item is the 'Mosi' moon jar by Yejin Shin's Artbo Studio, crafted from a traditional Korean ramie fabric. Hwang expresses her fascination with how such a traditional form can resonate with those unfamiliar with its history, illustrating the universal appeal of these designs.

In addition to homeware, Hye the Store offers apparel and accessories from brands like Oy, and Hwang plans to introduce her own original designs later this year, starting with placemats and coasters made from mosi and sambe fabrics. Beyond showcasing products, Hwang aspires to create community experiences through tea gatherings and events, allowing visitors to engage with the rituals that accompany these beautiful objects. She emphasizes, “We believe in the power of ordinary items to inspire your daily life, making every moment a little more meaningful.”
