Tragedy Strikes as Flash Floods Leave Hundreds Missing in Nepal and China

A devastating flash flood triggered by a glacier collapse in Tibet has resulted in extensive loss of life and numerous missing persons across the Nepal-China border. As of Thursday, August 27, 2026, authorities reported at least 273 fatalities and over 1,300 individuals unaccounted for, many of whom were foreign tourists visiting the region.
Local police reported 270 deaths and 826 missing. The National Emergency Operation Center provided an updated count, revealing that among the missing were 113 Nepali tourists and 161 residents of Rasuwa district. The National Tourism Board indicated that 517 foreigners were still untraceable, including a significant number from India, the United States, and Malaysia.
Chinese state media reported tragic figures from Gyirong County, with at least three dead and 558 missing, including 260 foreigners. The calamity has created confusion in the reporting of numbers due to varying collection methods and the chaos surrounding rescue efforts.
Among the missing are 55 Ukrainians, nine South Koreans, and several travelers from countries as diverse as Canada, Germany, and Australia. Worries have also been expressed for five Japanese nationals. The international impact of this disaster is profound, with individuals from over 30 nations reported missing.
