A devastating accident at a gold mining site in the Central African Republic has claimed the lives of at least 30 miners. The incident occurred on Tuesday morning, August 18, 2026, in the Abba region of the Nana-Mambere prefecture.
Survivor Florian Gaguende reported that rescue efforts are underway, but hopes of finding additional trapped miners alive are diminishing. Souleymane Bi, Deputy Mayor of the sub-prefecture, confirmed that rescuers and local residents have recovered 30 bodies from the rubble.
In the Central African Republic, artisanal mining is a common but perilous livelihood, with many miners lacking proper safety equipment. Bi emphasized the dire need for assistance, calling upon humanitarian organizations and the public to aid in the ongoing rescue efforts.
