A devastating incident occurred early Saturday morning on the A66 in Southbank, near Middlesbrough, where seven lives were lost, including two police officers during a high-speed pursuit. The chase began when Cleveland Police spotted a Volkswagen Passat suspected of operating with cloned number plates. However, the pursuit was aborted shortly after the vehicle began driving against the flow of traffic.
Just seconds later, the VW collided with an oncoming police armed response vehicle that was not participating in the chase. Both officers, identified as PC Matthew Blades, 37, and PC Tom Clough, 38, tragically died at the scene. Additionally, five young men traveling in the Passat—Makai Saddington, 18, Michael Robert Cahill, 23, Theo Rae, 17, Cole Worthy, 17, and Jakub Matusiak, 23—also lost their lives.
The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) has since launched an investigation into the fatal crash. According to the IOPC, initial analysis of the police vehicle’s footage revealed that the chase lasted about seven minutes before the Passat drove into oncoming traffic, prompting the officers to terminate the pursuit. Tragically, within ten seconds, the collision occurred.
Emergency services responded swiftly, with fourteen ambulance crews, including specialist teams, dispatched to the scene. Despite their efforts, all occupants of both vehicles were pronounced dead on-site. Eyewitness footage recorded just before the crash captured multiple police vehicles in pursuit of the Passat, further underscoring the speed and urgency of the situation.
The A66 was closed in both directions as investigators examined the wreckage, with a large tent set up at the site as a precaution. Cleveland Police Chief Constable Victoria Fuller expressed deep sorrow over the incident, stating, "This is an incredibly sad day for Cleveland. This loss is being felt across our communities, by our police family, and by our partner agencies." She emphasized the bravery of the officers who did not return home after their shift.
Tributes poured in for the fallen officers and the young men involved in the crash. Sharon Morgan lamented the loss of her nephew, Makai Saddington, saying, “There are no words that can truly express the pain of losing someone so young, so loved, and so full of life.” Kelly Cahill, mourning her son Michael, shared a heartfelt message, “Fly high my boy forever 23, go and be at peace.”
Local MP Anna Turley addressed the community’s grief, highlighting the bravery of the police officers who serve to protect the public. She said, “The whole community is obviously in shock and devastation.” The investigation by the IOPC continues as they gather further evidence and witness statements regarding the tragic circumstances of this incident.
