Leslie Parrish, the beloved actress known for her roles in iconic films such as Li’l Abner and The Manchurian Candidate, has passed away at the age of 90. Her family revealed that she died late last year in Washington state, a fact that was only recently made public by The Hollywood Reporter.

Born Marjorie Hellen on March 18, 1935, in Melrose, Massachusetts, Parrish initially pursued a career in music before transitioning to modeling and acting in New York. She made her film debut in the mid-1950s, adopting the stage name Leslie Parrish to enhance her appeal.

Parrish gained significant recognition for her portrayal of Daisy Mae in the 1959 film adaptation of Li’l Abner, where she captivated audiences with her charm. This role followed Edie Adams' acclaimed performance in the original Broadway production. Critics praised her performance, with The New York Times noting she “fills [the part] out generously.”

In 1962, she showcased her talent in The Manchurian Candidate, playing Jocelyn Jordan, the ill-fated daughter of a senator. This role became a personal favorite for Parrish, who described the film as a pivotal moment in her career.

Beyond film, she made memorable television appearances, including a role as Carolyn Palamas in the classic Star Trek episode “Who Mourns for Adonais?” and as Glacia Glaze in the Batman series. Throughout the 1960s, she continued to work in both film and television, appearing in shows like Perry Mason and The Wild Wild West.

In addition to her acting career, Parrish was a passionate activist. She participated in numerous peace marches during the Vietnam War era, advocating for social change. Her commitment to activism extended to co-founding the organization STOP! (Speakers and Talent Organized for Peace) and engaging in political campaigns.

Parrish was married to author Richard Bach in 1981, serving as his muse for several of his works. They later divorced in 1999, but she remained devoted to their shared values, contributing to conservation efforts that protected significant natural habitats in Washington state.

Her legacy extends beyond the screen and her activism, as she once expressed pride in her contributions to environmental preservation, stating that it was her most meaningful accomplishment.
