A devastating accident on the A66 has resulted in the deaths of five young men and two police officers, igniting an outpouring of grief from the community. The victims, identified as Makai Saddington (18), Michael Robert Cahill (23), Theo Rae (17), Cole Robert Worthy (17), and Jakub Matusiak (23), were involved in a Volkswagen Passat that collided with a police vehicle early Saturday morning.
The tragic incident unfolded after Cleveland Police initiated a pursuit of the VW after observing it behaving suspiciously in South Bank, near Middlesbrough. The pursuit was called off just moments before the collision occurred at 3:39 AM, when the Passat entered the A66 in the wrong direction and struck an oncoming police armed response unit that had not been involved in the chase.
In the aftermath, Cleveland Police Chief Constable Victoria Fuller paid tribute to the officers killed in the crash, PC Matthew Blades (37) and PC Tom Clough (38), for their bravery and dedication. Both were in the area to assist in the search for the vehicle. The incident is now under investigation by the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC), which revealed that the pursuit lasted seven minutes before it was terminated.
The community has rallied to honor the deceased, with heartfelt tributes flooding social media. Sharon Morgan expressed her grief over the loss of her nephew, Makai, stating, "There are no words that can truly express the pain of losing someone so young, so loved, and so full of life." Similarly, Kelly Cahill paid tribute to her son Michael, urging him to “fly high” and be at peace.
Friends of the victims also shared their sorrow. Ellie Webster, a close friend of Theo Rae, lamented the heartbreak his family now faces, while Channy Brown commemorated all five young men as “top lads” with “kind hearts,” stating they would be forever missed.
As the investigation continues, local residents reported hearing the sounds of multiple police vehicles racing down the street just moments before the crash. Neil Hutchinson, a Teesville resident, noted that the loud sirens woke him in the early hours of the morning.
The families of the deceased officers expressed their gratitude for the support they have received from the community. PC Clough’s family described him as a hero with a fantastic sense of humor, while PC Blades was remembered fondly as a devoted father and coach, looking forward to teaching his son in a local football league.
In light of this heartbreaking event, the A66 remains closed for investigation, with a large tent erected over the collision site as emergency services continue their work.
