A catastrophic landslide at Conakry's largest landfill, located in the Dar-es-Salam neighborhood, has resulted in the deaths of at least 30 individuals, with several more injured. The incident occurred early Sunday morning, triggered by heavy rains that caused a massive heap of waste to collapse, burying nearby homes.
The Guinean government has mobilized significant resources for search and rescue efforts, while Prime Minister Amadou Oury Bah visited the site to oversee operations. Local officials, including Lancine Sylla, have expressed fears of a rising death toll, confirming the recovery of at least 18 bodies thus far.
In a somber statement, former Prime Minister Cellou Dalein Diallo lamented the tragedy, emphasizing the urgent need for an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the disaster, particularly as the landfill was slated for closure on the same day.
