Tragic Missile Strikes Claim Lives in Kyiv, Sparking Calls for Mourning

By Editor • August 20, 2026 • 1 min read

In a devastating attack on Kyiv, Russian ballistic missiles have resulted in the deaths of at least 13 individuals and left over 30 injured, according to local officials. The strikes targeted multiple districts, including a nine-storey residential building in the Solomianskyi area, where a fire broke out, claiming seven lives.

Mayor Vitali Klitschko announced plans for a day of mourning on Friday, as the aftermath of the strikes left significant destruction in various parts of the city, impacting non-residential buildings, schools, and even a children's hospital. Power supply was also severely affected, with approximately 90,000 homes left without electricity.

Efforts to restore power were initiated by DTEK, which reported that over half of the affected homes regained electricity following the attack. Eyewitness accounts reveal the chaos experienced by residents, with one woman recalling the harrowing moment when explosions shattered her windows, narrowly missing her husband.

As air strikes from Russia intensify, Ukraine is simultaneously escalating its own attacks, targeting Russian oil facilities and logistics to weaken Moscow's military capabilities. Diplomatic efforts remain stalled, as Ukraine awaits responses to proposals it submitted to U.S. negotiators for a potential resolution to the ongoing conflict, which has persisted since Russia's invasion in February 2022.
