Tragic Mudslide Claims Lives at Tibet-Nepal Border

A devastating mudslide struck Gyirong county in Tibet on August 26, 2026, resulting in numerous casualties and missing persons at the Gyirong Port, according to Xinhua.
The incident occurred around 10:30 AM local time, with the mudslide originating from the Nepalese side of the border. In response to the crisis, President Xi Jinping called for urgent search efforts and enhanced monitoring systems to mitigate future disasters.
Search and rescue operations are currently ongoing, although access to the area has been severely hampered by damaged roads and disrupted communication and power supplies.
