Amazon Expands Nvidia Partnership with Major Chip Order Amid AI Surge

By Editor • August 26, 2026 • 2 min read

In a significant move within the tech industry, Amazon has announced a substantial expansion of its partnership with Nvidia, revealing plans to integrate an additional 2 million Nvidia GPU chips into its data centers. This announcement came during Nvidia's quarterly earnings call, highlighting the growing demand for advanced processing capabilities necessary for artificial intelligence (AI) applications.

The new GPUs set to be deployed include models such as the Nvidia Blackwell Ultra, Rubin, and Rubin Ultra, which are tailored for the rigorous computational needs of AI model training and deployment. These chips are expected to arrive at Amazon Web Services (AWS) between 2027 and 2028, significantly ramping up Amazon's existing order of more than 1 million Nvidia GPUs that was finalized just five months ago.

Nvidia’s CFO, Colette Kress, noted that the partnership reflects a surge in demand from various sectors, including startups, enterprises, AI labs, and government entities. The collaboration not only involves a larger order of chips but also integrates Nvidia's extensive technology suite across AWS, enhancing cloud services and infrastructure.

While the financial details of the deal remain undisclosed, estimates suggest that the contract could be worth tens of billions of dollars, given the cost of GPU units. This expanded collaboration comes at a time when Amazon is actively developing its own AI chips, aiming to reduce reliance on Nvidia.

Amazon's AI chief, Peter DeSantis, has indicated that AWS is exploring opportunities to market its custom Trainium chips as alternatives to Nvidia's offerings for deep learning workloads. Alongside this, Amazon's Graviton CPUs are viewed as competitors to conventional server chips produced by Intel and AMD.

Despite Amazon's initiatives to strengthen its chip manufacturing, Nvidia continues to lead the AI chip market. As part of the new agreement, Nvidia will also supply an undisclosed number of Vera CPUs, which are anticipated to be critical in powering AI infrastructure for major technology players.

Furthermore, Nvidia's technology will be utilized in Amazon's robotics initiatives, integrating various platforms for robotics development and simulation. This includes the adoption of Nvidia's Omniverse and Jetson systems to enhance the capabilities of Amazon's warehouse robots.

Nvidia's recent financial performance underscores the company’s dominance in the sector, with reported sales of $96.2 billion in the second quarter, and expectations of further growth in the upcoming quarter. CEO Jensen Huang emphasized the importance of AI in driving profitability across services, indicating a robust outlook for the future of AI technology in the industry.
