Transforming Waste into Harmony: The Ninefold Art Installation
By Editor • August 17, 2026 • 1 min read
In an innovative twist on sustainability, architect Hyojin Kwon and her collaborators have created a unique art installation that transforms discarded 3D printing materials into a harmonious sound experience. Titled Ninefold: A Distributed Resonant Field, the exhibition is currently showcased at the Reeves House Visual Arts Center in Woodstock, Georgia, and will be on display until September.
The installation features nine large-scale sculptures, each crafted from shredded PLA filament collected from various fabrication labs. This waste was repurposed through a pellet-based additive manufacturing process, resulting in objects that are not only visually striking but also produce distinct harmonic frequencies. As visitors navigate the space, they engage with the soundscape, which shifts and evolves based on their movement, creating an immersive experience.
What sets Ninefold apart is its commitment to transparency in material usage. Instead of disguising the recycled plastic, the installation boldly showcases its texture and color variations, honoring the history of its components. This approach elevates the conversation around sustainability, moving beyond mere marketing to a genuine practice.
Moreover, the modular design of the sculptures ensures they can be transported and reconfigured, emphasizing their longevity and continued relevance. Accompanying this installation is Plastic Reimagined: Material Agency & Circular Design, another exhibition developed in collaboration with Georgia Tech students, which also runs through September. Admission is free, making this a must-see for those passionate about art and sustainability.
