In a communication sent to applicants with scheduled interviews, the State Department indicated that appointments are being postponed and that new dates will be provided. Brian Simmons, a senior consular manager at the immigration law firm Fragomen, criticized the abrupt cancellations, highlighting the significant time and financial investments applicants have made in preparing for their interviews.

In a separate policy shift, the State Department revealed plans to revoke visas from foreigners who entered the U.S. as temporary visitors but later applied for asylum.
