Trump Claims Positive Response from Kim Jong Un Amid Military Exercises

President Donald Trump announced that North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has responded positively to his recent outreach, a statement made during an Oval Office press briefing on Monday. This comes just a day after Trump directed the Pentagon to significantly reduce joint military drills with South Korea, a long-time ally.
When pressed by reporters about Kim's lack of communication, Trump challenged their assumption, saying, "How do you know he hasn’t responded?" He described the dialogue as "very positive" but did not elaborate further.
In a post on his Truth Social platform, Trump criticized the annual military exercises with South Korea, calling them costly and suggesting they send an inappropriate signal to North Korea. He linked his decision to Seoul's reluctance to assist the U.S. in its military operations concerning Iran.
South Korean officials confirmed that the military drills commenced as planned and expressed hope that Trump's rapport with Kim could facilitate renewed talks. President Lee Jae Myung emphasized that the exercises are not intended to provoke North Korea but to ensure the safety of South Korean citizens.
Since their last summit in 2019, when negotiations stalled over nuclear disarmament, Trump has shown ongoing interest in rekindling diplomacy with Kim. Analysts suggest that while North Korea may not respond quickly, the possibility of another meeting remains, albeit with Kim in a stronger position now. Victor Cha from the Center for Strategic and International Studies speculated that Trump's renewed focus on North Korea might also serve to divert attention from his challenges regarding the Iran conflict.
